So as the days get colder I always joke that it is great beer drinking weather since your beer stays cold. But sitting here drinking my morning cup of joe looking at one of my favorite sites lifehacker.com I ran across this story about mulled beer. Mulled beer is hot spiced beer. It was all the rage between the 1500 and 1800’s. It was thought to be healtier than drinking cold. There is a good history of mulled beer at northamericanbrewers.org
Here is a recipe from wikihow and the full how to is here as well.
- 12-16 oz decent-quality beer (the contents of your average bottle or can of beer)
- 1 chicken egg, separated
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 pinch ground ginger, or 1 slice (sometimes called “coins”) of ginger 1/4″ long
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg
- 1-2 pinch(es) cinnamon, or 1″ section of a cinnamon stick
- 1 pinch ground cloves or 2-5 whole cloves
- 1 tablespoon honey
So hot spiced beer? I will have to try and post about it as that is what we do at BeerUtopia.com but if you have tried it let me know.

Egg in beer? Um, no thanks.
Wassail is sweet spiced ale (or wine) and is often served hot. However, I picked up some Full Sail wassail and it was not very sweet and the spiciness seemed to come from the hops.
When you heat beer, or any alcoholic beverage, some of the alcohol will evaporate so you probably want to use a beer with high ABV. A warm drink will keep you warm for a few minutes but alcohol can keep you warm for hours.
how does the egg work into it, i have to read up on this
Gosh, this almost sounds like a desert with all those yummy spices and honey added to it.
